She eventually joined them after her old crew was defeated, and they quickly came to bond with each other. Although she joined the Straw Hat Pirates a little later in the series, she was originally an antagonist for the team. Nico Robin has quickly become a fan favorite, and it is easy to see why. Shanks would give Luffy a straw hat, holding no ill will towards Luffy, promising to meet Luffy again on their respective pirate journeys. First, he sacrificed his arm to the monster's appetite and then stared down the beast until it left in submission. With this in mind, the bandit leader would kidnap Luffy and threaten to throw him overboard to be eaten by a sea monster, and Shanks would save his friend. This would cause Luffy to become a rubber man but cursed with the inability to swim, a pirate's worst fear. Shanks did more than inspire Luffy, as Shanks had previously discovered one of the Devil Fruits, a magically cursed item that Luffy ate without knowing its origins. This would lead to Shanks being verbally dragged by a bandit leader, which Luffy would respond to by standing up for his hero. Shanks was often cool-headed, never looking to escalate a fight needlessly. Luffy with his acts of kindness and tales of his adventures across the seas with his crew. The pirate that started it all, "Red-Haired" Shanks, would inspire a young Monkey D.
